Oh My Denim!
My youngest sister has been painting on clothing for me for a few years! However, she moved to North Carolina and I wanted to make a personalized denim jacket for Marlee. Someone suggested using denim patches or iron-on vinyl… but I think that fabric paint might last longer. Now, I’m not an artist like my sister and I have shaky hands. Getting it to look right was my problem! I thought about a stencil but I wanted to make sure it didn’t move. I’ve seen projects on Pinterest where they used removable vinyl as the stencil. So I had to give it a try! The design I wanted wasn’t that big and I knew this was the perfect project for my new Cricut Joy!
The Cricut Joy is perfect for smaller sized projects! I still love my Cricut Maker but the Cricut Joy is so convenient. Also, have you tried the Cricut Smart Vinyl? No need for a mat! Being a busy mom, I need all the shortcuts. For this project, I only needed the Cricut Joy Machine, Cricut Joy Smart Removable Vinyl, and Weeder (I couldn’t find my Tweezers, it probably would’ve been better if I used Tweezers). Other tolls: sponge brushes, paint brush, fabric paint, and the denim jacket.
Popped open my laptop and opened up Cricut Design Space! I didn’t have a design in mind but I know I wanted her name. So I used a simple, yet fun font! What do you think? If this was an iron-on project, you’d have to mirror cut the design. BUT since I’m using removable vinyl, I didn’t need to do that step.
After the design was cut with the Cricut Joy, I weeded out the letters only, since I needed it as a stencil. It looked like this when I was done weeding and placed it on where I wanted to paint.
Now the fun part, I wanted a distressed look. So I did white first, then outlined with black, and sponged brushed more black.
I removed the stencil after the paint dried but I felt like it was still missing something. I decided to add a lightning bolt under her name because it’s the perfect symbol that represents her personality. 😂 I really wanted a firecracker but I thought that would’ve been a little more difficult.
So… here’s the final product. What do you think? I really love the distressed/washed out look. Now, I need matching jackets for myself and Maya too.
